Can Intrinsic Motivation Be Taught?

When it comes to motivating the workforce, lay people tend to think about the level of material rewards, such as fatter wages, a company vehicle, a larger office, and so on. A  global executive coach, on the other hand, understands that such material considerations only provide external motivation, the effects of which are likely to disappear quickly. Intrinsic motivation has the power to bring about lasting change. It changes behavior and satisfies deep-rooted psychological and intellectual needs. Intelligent leaders understand that they can harness the power of intrinsic motivation on a personal level to become better leaders, while fostering an organizational culture in which intrinsic motivation of employees is a priority.

What is intrinsic motivation?

Intrinsic motivation as a spontaneous, natural tendency to explore, seek news, learn, and broaden horizons. It is an innate ability that allows us to engage in a variety of activities because we find them satisfying and interesting. To understand why intrinsic motivation is so much more effective than motivation through external factors, we need to construct it and analyze its components.

Autonomy determines the feeling of control, the freedom to act of one's own will, not the coercion of an external controlling party. Autonomy is extremely empowering and should be the manager's leverage in terms of employee opportunities.

Mastery means a delicate balance between challenge and achievement that makes something completely so enjoyable. This also applies to the belief in the ability to function well while enjoying the activity you perform.

Connection determines the perception of a sense of purpose in what you do. With this connection, you feel the joy and satisfaction you get from your work.

Progress in meaningful work. The fact that you succeed with something meaningful is a strong motivator. For someone who is well connected to his / her work, significant progress does not equate to significant progress. Even small, easy-to-reach milestones can increase your intrinsic motivation.

Can you teach intrinsic motivation?

Leadership development coaches have long seen intrinsic motivation as a powerful way to build leadership performance. They have also identified ways in which leaders can teach them self-motivated leadership skills.

To create autonomy, set long-term goals, clearly define those goals, defeat resistance, and explore options.

To build mastery, focus on changing your sense of competence and frame as a challenge.

To connect, make sure you know why you're doing what you're doing. Also add a personal touch to your goals and define some practical steps you can take right now to achieve them.

Are you more transitional in terms of career choices? Working on connections and autonomy can be more useful for you. Dr David is a life coach  and  counsels clients on a variety of personal and professional issues.

The Communication Problems That Can Affect Your Leadership

If you go straight to your office first and close the door of the day, you communicate with something completely different than when you greet people and make it clear that, for example, you are available. Many managers emphasize technical skills as more important than communication skills, but what are technical skills if no one is communicating? How Leaders Help Strategic Thinking Flow Throughout An Organization

Home Strategic thinking is a deliberate and rational thought process that considers both the immediate situation and desired long-term results. It is both realistic and forward-looking , considering both situational constants and the inevitability of change. The strategic thinker is neither stuck in the present and focused on tactics, nor stuck in the clouds , envisioning a future without mapping out steps to success.  Why Strategic Thinking Skills Are Essential to Strong Leadership Leadership that focuses on individual “trees” without taking in a view of the entire “forest” is unlikely to innovate. Myopic leadership may be fine for the short term , but it doesn’t lay foundations for a healthy , long-term future. A leader who is skilled at strategic thinking knows how to do several things competently: ·          Analyse   opportunities and vulnerabilities ·          Weigh the feasi...
